On 9 July, 2026, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei funeral has reached to completion. The coffin of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made his way through the holy streets of Najaf reaching the holy shrine of Imam Ali. During the funeral ceremony of Iranian Supreme leader, thousands of mourners were present in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Furthermore, the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is marked as a great event in the history of Iran.

The ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral began on Saturday, with authorities in Tehran shutting down streets and airspace to ensure safety and thesmooth completion of the ceremonial activities. Thousands of people honored the life of Iranian Supreme leader who led Iran with an iron fist against West. The authorities took the body of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Karbala before returning to Iran.

Furthermore, the Iranian Supreme Leader was killed in late February in response to US-Israeli air strikes and missiles on Iran that escalated the Iran-Israel-US war. He was killed along with several senior leaders in the air strike.  

Initially, on Tuesday, the body of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei arrived in Najaf. Since it is considered one of the holiest cities for millions of Shia Muslims all around the world. The senior leaders of Iran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, escorted the body of Iranian Supreme leader. Furthermore, the body was placed in an Iranian flag covered casket, covered inside a glass case. Moreover, Muhammad Taqi al-Hakim, who is a senior scholar at the Najaf seminary, led the funeral prayers at the Shrine of Imam Ali.

“We, the people of Iraq, will remain a thorn in the eyes of the enemies,” said Jaafar Jawad, a funeral attendee. “(His body arriving here) is the greatest possible honor, and God willing, we will be loyal and repay a little of his debt in the holy city of Najaf.”

In addition, when the body of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reached Karbala, thousands of supporters and mourners gathered in the desert for the funeral prayers. The funeral prayer of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was led by a representative of the top Shia religious authority, Mahdi al-Karbalaei. This is the same place where Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Holy Prophet (SAWW), was killed. Therefore, inside the Imam al-Abbas Mosque, organizers decided to lower the coffin in an attempt to stop people who were pushing forward to seek blessings or to participate in carrying it.

Who attended the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Funeral?

According to the reports, leaders and representatives from 100 countries attended the funeral ceremony of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei today. Additionally, there were no heads of government from Western countries reported at the funeral. Moreover, representation came primarily from Iran’s regional allies, religious leaders and officials from Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Future after the funeral

In conclusion, the new supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has not made a public appearance at the funeral ceremony that have been ongoing for few days now. It is argued that he might be hiding as it is reported that he was wounded in the air strike that martyred Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Consequently, the nuclear program of Iran is still crucial despite the sanctions and economic penalties. The future negotiations, sanctions, and regional security dynamics are likely to shape the international relations of Iran. Furthermore, the US-Iran-Israel relations are also the crucial parameter to watch as what the future withholds.

To summarize, Iraqi Mohammed al-Bayati, travelled all the way to Najaf, said it was “an opportunity not to be missed to participate in the funeral of the person who challenged the power of America and Israel”.
